Mariko Nakawatase is a dynamic community leader and District Director for San Diego County Supervisor Joel Anderson, where she oversees district operations, staff, and community outreach across the district. With a background in Philosophy, Politics, and Law and a Master’s in Public Administration from Arizona State University, Mariko is recognized for her strategic leadership, coalition-building, and dedication to empowering local communities.
Mariko’s academic achievements equipped her with invaluable knowledge to navigate complex societal challenges and promote effective and equitable public policies. Recognizing the importance of community engagement, she became actively involved in initiatives designed to spark meaningful dialogue and create spaces where every perspective is heard and valued.
Known for her results-oriented approach, Mariko is deeply committed to advancing public service, strengthening partnerships, and driving initiatives that make a lasting impact throughout San Diego County.
Outside of work, Mariko enjoys camping, hiking, and spending time with her husband, David, and their dog, Thunder. She’s an avid reader of non-fiction books that explore the world’s curiosities and the deeper “why” behind how society functions today.
